# ランダムハウスの特色、日英も比較しつつ

Random House Webster（ランダムハウス英和大辞典の親本）を買ったというエントリで、

> ランダムハウスのほかにはあまり見ない語義が載ってたりすることもある。

と書きました。

ランダムハウスの最大の魅力は、

語義の分類が細かく丁寧な（場合が多い）こと

です。

その一例を挙げてみます。

引いてみたのは、party という単語。

日本語版である『小学館ランダムハウス英和大辞典』と、英語版である Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary の語義を並べて書いてみます。

日本語版が上の行、英語版が下の行（青字）です。語義以外の情報や例文、【11】以降の俗語などは、適宜割愛しています。

【1】社交的な集まり,会合,パーティー:

日英では、収録の順番が違っており、大項目と小項目の分類もすこしずつ違っています。このあたり、日本語版の編集でいろいろ工夫していることが感じられて、おもしろいところです。

ここで注目したいのは【10】（英語版の14）の語義です。具体的な「パーティー」ではなく、「お楽しみはこれからだ」みたいに使うときの語義です。

そのほかの辞書では、大辞典から学習辞典までいろいろ見てみましたが、この語義は立項されていません。

用例まで細かく見ていけば、同じような内容はあるのですが、だいたい「パーティー」の項に吸収されているようです。

The ～ is over. パーティーは終った；((略式))楽しいことはもうおしまい.【G大、1の項】

The party is over and I'm still basking in the afterglow of renewing old friendships.【うんのさん】

The party's over. ((口)) お楽しみはおしまい.【R3】

大切なのは、ランダムハウスではこれが独立したひとつの語義として立項されているということです。

以前、類語辞典についてのエントリで、類語かどうかのカテゴリー分けに意味があるという意味のことを書きました。

それと同様、ある辞書がどういう語義を立てているか（あるいは大項目、小項目などの分類も）という観点は、辞書の編集方針を反映し、辞書の特色となるポイントです。

ただし、細かく立項しているほうがいい、と言っているわけではありません。それぞれの辞書の特徴だという話です。当然ですが、各種の国語辞典を見ても、こういう違いはあります。

ちなみに、OED ではこうなっていました。

9. b. Phrases: the party is over: enjoyment must stop; the happy or easy times are at an end; to keep the party clean: to act responsibly; to conform to accepted patterns of behaviour.

ということは、ほとんどこの句でしか使われない語義を、ランダムハウスはわざわざ立項したとも考えられます。

そういえば、英和大辞典のうち、G大と研究社英和大は、LogoVistaなども利用すれば今でもそろえられますが、ランダムハウスだけは、辞書ブラウザに使えるデータがほぼ入手不可になっています。

あいかわらず電子辞書には収録されており、アプリもあるようですが、小学館さん、CD-ROMの再版を考えてくれないものでしょうか。
